COUPLINGS: WHAT ARE THEY – FEATURES & BENEFITS

COUPLINGS: WHAT ARE THEY – FEATURES & BENEFITS

Mechanical components are and will remain essential in Motion Transmission, as the needs of the industry are constantly increasing in many areas, such as energy saving, ease of machine maintenance, etc.

KTR Systems is world-renowned for the solutions it offers, especially for couplings, which we will see in detail in this article.

However, it also has a multitude of other products, such as torque limiters, clamping sets and precision joint shafts, which are considered indispensable partners in the Industry.

But let's look at the couplings in more detail, starting from the beginning.

COUPLINGS – WHAT ARE THEY & WHERE ARE THEY USED?

The coupling or coupler is a joint of two shafts.

The two shafts come from two different machines that we want to connect to transmit the motion and sometimes they are not perfectly aligned, they don't have the same diameter or they have some distance between them.

For this reason, to transmit the motion we put a coupling in between.

The operation of these couplings is based on the simple mechanical connection between two shafts, the "driving part" which is usually an Electric Motor and the "driven part" which can be a gearunit or a pump for example.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF KTR COuplings?

There are different types of couplings, depending on the connecting material (spider or links) between the two hubs used to transmit the torque, such as polyamide "daisy" type, metal pins, metal gaskets (lamina) and even gear couplings.

More specifically, KTR has the following types of spiders:

FLEXIBLE COUPLings with elastic spider (ROTEX, POLY-NORM, RUFLEX, POLY, REVOLEX)

These couplings usually consist of 3 pieces, two metal hubs that can be drilled to the desired diameter and in between they have an elastic spider with different hardnesses for different transmitted torques.

In the event of an overload or a sudden stop of one shaft, the elastic spider breaks and thus protects the machine on the second shaft.

WHY ARE KTR ROTEX COuplings necessary IN EVERY INDUSTRY?

The ROTEX family of KTR SYSTEMS is your everyday "partner" in the industry with a multitude of solutions for your daily needs and for every type of application.

The "daisy" rubber insert, depending on the hardness of the elastomer (the most common options are 92 Shore-A, 98 Shore-A, 64 Shore-D) can for the same size give the application different values for the transmitted nominal torque.

We distinguish three main types with their characteristic colors:

  • Orange: 92 Sh-A (T-PUR®)
  • Purple: 98 Sh-A (T-PUR®)
  • Green: 64 Sh-D (T-PUR®)

Starting from 92 Sh-A and increasing the hardness of the material, thus greater transmitted torque, we end up with 64 Sh-D.

GEAR COUPLings WITH POLYAMIDE CONNECTION (BOWEX)

BOWEX toothed couplings usually consist of 3 pieces, two metal toothed hubs that can be drilled to the desired diameter, which are connected by a polyamide sleeve with internal teeth.

In the event of an overload or sudden stop of one axis, the toothing of the sleeve is destroyed, thus protecting the machine on the second axis. On small horsepower and shafts, the entire coupling can be made of polyamide and consists of 2 pieces. They do not need maintenance.

GEAR COUPLINGS WITH METAL CONNECTION (GEAREX)

Couplings usually consist of 3 pieces, two metal toothed hubs that can be drilled to the desired diameter connected by a sleeve with internal metal teeth. They are used for higher transmitted forces and do not require maintenance.

COUPLings WITH STEEL LAMINAE (RADEX, RIGIFLEX)

RADEX couplings with high quality and durable metal plates are the ideal solution for special applications.

HIGH ELASTICITY AXIAL COUPLings (EVOLASTIC, BOWEX HEW)

They consist almost exclusively of an elastic part, absorb shocks and sudden changes in cases of overload.

flanged couplings (BOWEX FLEPA, BOWEX ELASTIC, SINULASTIC, MONOLASTIC)

They are used in internal combustion engines to drive pumps, compressors and components that need movement in construction, agricultural, asphalt, etc. machinery.

magnetic couplings (MINEX)

Magnetic couplings that engage without contact, ideal for pumps and agitators.

hydraulic couplings

Couplings that have oil inside and consist of 2 separate parts (the outer shell and the inner impeller).

When the engine starts, it rotates the internal impeller that is on its axis, the kinetic energy created is transferred through the oil to the external part of the coupling, achieving the transmission of the rotation with a smooth start.

In the event that one side becomes blocked, the oil heats up and either escapes through a special fusible valve, thus stopping the transmission of movement between the two connected machines, or it notifies us of the increase in temperature through a mechanical or electronic valve and we stop the transmission of movement without losing the oil. They are usually used in large crushers, in ship engines, large conveyor belts where a smooth start under load is needed, etc.

KTR COuplings – FEATURES & BENEFITS

The advantages of couplings, always depending on the type of insert to be used, are many. Some of their characteristics are the following:

  • Damping of axial and radial displacements of the axes within predetermined limits
  • High transmitted torque
  • Vibration reduction
  • Reduce angular displacement
  • Operation in an explosion-proof environment
  • Choice of construction material of any type (aluminum, cast iron, steel)

We mentioned to you that there is a multitude of solutions for each of your applications.

For example, the ROTEX rubber coupling with split hubs is made in such a way that it can be placed between the drive system (e.g. electric motor) and the driven part (e.g. reducer) without the need to move any of the two machines . This results in almost immediate replacement of any "part" of the coupling in case of failure (hub or rubber insert) in a very short time.

Even in the case of a connection between a shaft and a flange, the ROTEX type can offer a solution.
