What is a hoist?

The hoist is a lifting machine used in many different fields, such as the industry, on construction sites, in warehouses, workshops, car maintenance garages, stage applications, docks and large ships for lifting, lowering and moving heavy objects.

TYPES OF HOISTS AND DIFFERENCES IN THEIR USE WHEN LIFTING LOADS

Hoists can use chain or rope and are divided into three subcategories:

  • electric (powered)
  • pneumatic (operated with pressurized air)
  • manual

Chain hoists use a chain that moves with a chain sprocket wheel. The sprocket is a grooved cylinder that is driven by a motor and rotates to release or pull the chain. The chain is collected in a special chain bag hanging near the body of the hoist.

Rope hoists use a wire rope wrapped in a drum that moves with the help of a motor. This is wrapped or released when the hoist raises or lowers the load.

Manual hoists can only use chain and have a second smaller chain which the user pulls to lift the load.

The part to which the load is attached is called a lifting hook. All types of hoists have a lifting hook.

For all types of winches there are special accessories, adapted to the specific needs of the customer’s application, some of which are listed below.

ELEctric hoists: everything you need to know!

Electric hoists are an invaluable advantage for lifting heavy materials and equipment, as they give the user several options (speed, trolley, type of suspension, hand control length) so that the appropriate one can be selected for each application. They are available in various sizes, from small versions for small weights of a few kilos to bigger versions located on multi-ton cranes.

The electric hoists are adjusted according to the weight that the user wants to lift and with the respective application. There is the possibility of different types of hanging, fixed with a hook or even by placing the hoist on a rail and the use of a manual or electric trolley. Also, depending on the application, there is the possibility for the hoist to have two lifting speeds as well as travelling speeds (in the case of the electric trolley) for applications that want fast lifting of a load but also precision in moving it at fast and slow speed.

Chain hoists, such as those of the company CMCO YALE, are the most economical and easiest to maintain and repair.

Wire Rope hoists are usually faster to lift but also with higher maintenance requirements. Wire rope hoists are preferred on large crane bridges.

All modern electric hoists have a safety brake in case of lifting a load that exceeds the possibility of the hoist, so as not to damage it. All controls are low voltage to ensure the safety of the user in case for some reason the cable is cut and they also have an emergency stop button on their controller so that the movement can be stopped immediately, if any problem occurs during the use.

why should you invest in an electric hoist for lifting and moving your loads?

The main advantage of the electric hoists is the ability to lift heavy loads and volume, easily and safely. They give a great advantage to the operator making his work more efficient and economical. Properly maintained, the hoists will work perfectly for a long time. Any problems can usually be easily fixed.

Electric hoists are a cost-effective and very safe way to lift all types of objects, large or small, light or heavy, in all spaces.

when and why you should choose pneumatic hoists for your loads

The pneumatic hoists use the air network in the installation to operate. By supplying the hoist with a specific air pressure (bar), according to the manufacturer's instructions, the load is lifted and possibly transported by a pneumatic trolley.

Pneumatic hoists do exactly the same job as electric hoists with the only difference being that they operate with air under pressure. This means that they can operate more easily in conditions where no power connections are allowed. It is recommended to use them in places where explosion protection is necessary (explosion-proof environments), under water, in remote places, etc.

advantages of manual hoists

The manual hoists have 2 chains. One, which has a hook at the end and is used to lift and lower the load and the second is the one used by the operator to give the direction of movement (up or down) to the chain that lifts the load.

Manual hoists do not need electricity or air to operate and are the easiest to carry anywhere they are needed due to their light weight. They are not commonly used when the load has to be lifted several meters because all the movement is done manually. They are widely used when the lifting height is small, when the user's location has neither electricity nor air, in small applications we need to lift the load a few centimeters to put it on a pallet, etc. They are very economical and have minimal maintenance requirements.

special characteristics of the various types of hoists

All hoists can be ordered in an explosion-proof version, with stainless steel chain, with stainless steel hook, with manual or electric trolley, for various lifting heights, with or without chain bag, with special surface paints, with food oil for the winch gear, with wireless controls and other additional features. It all depends on the environment in which they will operate and there are solutions for all cases.

Especially in stage applications, where the whole construction has to be lifted with the lights and speakers above the stage, special electric and manual hoists are used with extra safety because they work over people.

The basic versions of the chain and manual hoists are ready to be delivered or can be ordered with the features the user wants from the manufacturer.

The company CHR. BOZNOS & SON SA with its many years of experience in both industrial automation and drive systems, as well as in lifting systems, can advise and help you with whatever you need.
