What is a Geared Motor and what is its use in the industry?

Company CHR. BOZNOS & SON S.A., with a long experience in the import and distribution of power transmission products, represents some of the greatest manufacturers in the world in the field, with the leading one being company SEW - EURODRIVE. The German company with almost 90 years of experience provides high quality gearedmotors with technical specifications that achieve excellent results and safe operation.

Gearedmotors have made a significant contribution to one of the most important scientific areas, the science of Engineering. This science has managed to apply the principles of physics for the purpose of designing and manufacturing of various machines, devices and tools.

The science of Engineering consists of various fields of application, with the most notable being that of power transmission. Its special importance can be found in many transmission systems, from the simplest form, such as the chain system in bicycles, to the most complex, such as that in the gearboxes of cars.

Transmission systems can connect the energy source that initiates movement to the machine that produces the work. They transfer the torque of an engine in a way that meets the functional needs of the machine, while they can maintain or even convert the smooth motion into other forms of motion, such as linear and rotational. However, in order to achieve a stable and controlled movement in a construction, the gearedmotor is used.

WHAT IS A GEAREDMOTOR AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The gearedmotor is a machine that combines an electric motor with a gear unit. Thanks to its features, it can reduce the number of revolutions provided by the electric motor in order to control the speed and the transmission of the motion. It is used in industrial automation, especially in installations and machines, where it is necessary to constantly transfer the necessary torque in order to achieve optimal operation.

The gear unit is a machine that transfers the motion using pairs of teethed gears (reduction steps). These reduction stages may consist of a combination of helical, helical bevel and worm gears. By operating them in a specially designed box submerged in a lubricant bath, the smooth transfer of the electric motor power is achieved as well as the transfer of the achieved torque depending on the reduction ratio of the gearbox.

WHAT TYPES OF GEAREDMOTORS ARE ON THE MARKET?

The variety of the types of gears also shapes the various types of gearboxes used, especially those offered by SEW - EURODRIVE. They include in-line gearboxes, parallel axis gearboxes and planetary gearboxes. Furthermore an additional categorization of gearedmotor types is achieved based on the morphology and direction of the shaft. These include:

  • R-series helical gear units,
  • F-series parallel shaft helical gear units
  • K-series helical bevel gear units
  • S-series helical-worm gear units
  • W-series SPIROPLAN right angle gear units
  • P-series industrial gear units
  • X.e. -series industrial gear units with helical and conical gears.

For the optimal selection of SEW – EURODRIVE gearedmotors, important criteria are needed such as the transmitted power and the requested reduction ratio, elements of utmost importance for the smooth operation of each application.
